I create design strategies for startup companies to global brands. I specialize in brand communication strategy, and creative direction through an art direction lens.

I’ve been creating relevant and differentiated design systems for over 20 years. My experience with different teams’ structure, needs and internal experience levels has probably overlapped with your current circumstances. I’m adaptable and curious to hear about your project.

I love all kinds of challenges and opportunities to create new value in the world.

  • I start our work with explorations of the stories, myths, archetypes and metaphors that surround your project as the building blocks, along with extensive trends research in service of defining a relevant position for shaping new brands or to help old ones find their soul again.

  • I attended the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. I also hold an Internet Design Certificate from San Francisco State University’s Multimedia Studies Program in 1999, and a BA in Communications and English from California State University Fullerton.

  • Among other things, have also been the founder and creative director for a lifestyle-focused canned wine brand, Free Public Wines in recent past-life. I was an integral partner in bringing it to market on the West Coast.

I have also founded and run a nonprofit organization, based in Los Angeles and Portland, OR that worked with disadvantaged youth to create ‘zines and billboards as a way to introduce creativity and options in the creative industries.

A skilled (art) director with a strong internal compass relating to story, metaphor and craft. He balances the methodical with the instinctual–from typography, color sensibility and especially concept development rooted in brand thinking.

Michael is very courageous in his work. He took creative risks that were very strategic and really pushed the boundaries of what we could achieve.
The inherent outlaw in him is balanced by an equally inherent good taste.
